Traces of Time

Gallery iLHO presents Traces of Time, a four-person exhibition featuring Kim Guiline, Lee Kunyong, Choi Youngwook, and Gu Aekyung, on view from October 16 to November 11, 2025. Time itself is invisible, yet it leaves traces in every moment of our lives. This exhibition brings together four artists who each explore and embody the passage of time in their own way, allowing viewers to encounter diverse expressions of temporality within a shared space.

Kim Guiline has long explored color, light, and the structural interplay of dots and grids to recover depth within the pictorial plane. His paintings, like living, breathing surfaces, record both the artist’s physical gestures and the slow accumulation of time. Between transparency and opacity, reflection and absorption, his works transcend the limits of the traditional frame, opening up a sense of infinite spatiality.

Since the 1960s, Lee Kunyong has probed the essence of art through the relationships among body, space, and audience. His works are not simply visual outcomes but acts themselves—placing performance at the core of artistic practice. Through the reciprocal definition of body and space, Lee inscribes the flow of time into his own physical presence, questioning the ontological meaning of art.

Choi Youngwook reinterprets the traditional Korean moon jar (dalhangari) through a contemporary lens, reviving the historical and emotional resonance embedded within it. His series of moon jars transcend mere form; they embody the fullness of life’s passage and stand as vessels of existence and solace. Within these works, viewers are invited to reflect upon personal memories and emotions, experiencing the cyclical and continuous nature of time.

Gu Aekyung seeks to approach essence through the performative repetition of gestures. Grounded in the materiality of hanji (traditional Korean paper) and the structural order of the grid, her work traces layers of time through intersections, overlaps, and detachments. In the process of repetition and variation, the surface transforms into both material and object, holding within itself the tangible traces of time.

Together, these four artists present distinct yet interwoven records of time. Their works—emerging between disappearance and creation, action and record, tradition and contemporaneity—open a contemplative space in which the multifaceted nature of time may be sensed and reflected upon. Through these traces, viewers are invited to discover their own perception of time.
